There are certain actions that may lead to a Murid's disconnection from the path if they commit them. These matters have been explained in the books of the Tariqah, and whoever wishes to study them in detail should refer to those works. Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs.
I say: The conditions mentioned by Shaykh Sukayrij, which he identified as causes for a disciple's disconnection from the path, are only three:
1. Completely abandoning the path after having embraced it.
2. Combining it with another Sufi path.
3. Visiting saints with the intention of seeking blessings (tabarruk) or spiritual assistance (istimdad)…
Know that the Tijaniyyah path, like all other authentic Sufi paths, becomes binding only through the instruction of the Shaykh and the acceptance of the seeker. Three conditions must be fulfilled by the seeker. If even one of these conditions is violated, the spiritual bond between the seeker and Sidi Ahmad al-Tijani is considered severed.
The first condition is a firm commitment never to abandon the prescribed litanies (awrad) after receiving them from the Shaykh or his authorized representative, even if they were transmitted through intermediaries.
The second condition is a commitment not to visit saints, whether living or deceased, with the intention of seeking blessings (tabarruk) or spiritual assistance (istimdad). However, visiting them for the sake of Islamic brotherhood, maintaining family ties, expressing gratitude, or any other lawful purpose is not prohibited in any way.
The third condition is a commitment not to combine this path with any other Sufi path or with the obligatory litanies prescribed by another Tariqah.
These conditions are binding upon every seeker who enters the path. Failure to uphold any one of them results in the seeker no longer being considered a member of the Tijaniyyah. Just as these conditions are required at the time of initiation, they remain binding throughout one's affiliation with the path.
The Shaykh said:
"Three things sever the disciple from us: combining another wird with ours, visiting saints, and abandoning the wird."
Sidi Muhammad al-Tayyib ibn Sidi Muhammad al-Husayni, popularly known as al-Sufyani, explained:
"This means abandoning the Tijani wird by adopting another wird alongside it, even if the other wird had been received previously, because exclusivity is a condition of this path. His mention of 'saints' includes both the living and the deceased."
The scholars of the Tariqah have further stated that anyone who abandons the path after initiation, or commits any of the aforementioned violations, is not to be readmitted into the Tijaniyyah until they sincerely repent and publicly renounce whatever contradicts the principles of the path. Only then may the Muqaddam renew their affiliation with the Tariqah.
However, if a person merely falls into sinful or prohibited acts, their ruling is the same as that of any other Muslim. They are required to repent and abandon the sin, but renewal of their Tijani affiliation is not necessary, since such sins do not, in themselves, sever one's connection to the path.

Bughyat al-Mustafid is one of the most important works on the history and rulings of the Tijani Tariqah. Written by Sidi al-Arabi ibn Sa'ih, nicknamed the "Bukhari of the Path", it summarizes the biographical accounts from Jawahir al-Ma'ānī and codifies the rulings of the path that had been scattered in different locations. The author's critical placement in the history of the path, having met many of the Companions of the Shaykh himself, as well as many of the imminent muqaddams, made him an indispensable source of clarity on many of the issues a Tijani disciple will face while walking the path.
The book also serves as a bridge to longer or more complicated works. It has been said, "If you want to read Jawahir al-Ma'ani, read Bughyat al-Mustafid first." This is because he clarifies some of the issues in Jawahir al-Ma'ani that may lead to a disciple having doubts or some misunderstandings.
