By: Shaykh Shariff Ibrahim Saleh RTA in “An-Nahj al-Hamid”
“One of the greatest conditions of the Tijaniyyah path is the veneration of all saints without exception, believing in their virtue and affirming their miracles. This is the creed of Ahl al-Sunnah. The Shaykh's prohibition against visiting other saints is not intended as an expression of disrespect or disdain for them. Rather, it is based on Allah's consideration of the best interests of the Murid undergoing spiritual training.
The ʿarifūn (gnostics) unanimously agree that a seeker undergoing spiritual training (Murid al-Tarbiyyah) should have only one Shaykh. A Murid cannot derive the full benefit of spiritual training if they waver between two Shaykhs because of the differing spiritual attributes, divine lights, and strengths that Allah has bestowed upon each of them. Such wavering may lead to confusion in the Murid's heart and mind, preventing the complete sincerity and devotion to either Shaykh that are necessary for receiving divine secrets and spiritual illuminations. Therefore, remaining committed to a single Shaykh is more beneficial and appropriate for the Murid.
However, visiting the saints with the intention of drawing nearer to Allah, or visiting their graves for reflection, remembrance, and supplication on their behalf, is an action unanimously recognized as permissible. This practice is established by the Sunnah, and no one has the right to prohibit it. The Tijaniyyah path neither forbids nor discourages this practice. Indeed, there is no condition within the Tijaniyyah path that contradicts the Qur'an or the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.
The Shaykh, may Allah be pleased with him, said:
"If you hear something from me, weigh it against the scale of the Shariah. Whatever conforms to it, take it; and whatever contradicts it, leave it."
This principle established by the Shaykh is precise and foundational to the Tijaniyyah path. Therefore, any statement or claim that conflicts with this principle must be rejected.
He also said:
"We have one fundamental principle upon which all rulings are based: no one has the authority to legislate except Allah and His Messenger. Any ruling or fatwa issued by scholars is invalid unless it is grounded in the Qur'an and the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah."
These are his words in meaning rather than exact wording. They clearly demonstrate the Shaykh's unwavering adherence to the Sunnah and his call to follow it.”
