ETIQUTTES OF THE MURIDS WITH ONE ANOTHER

By: Shaykh Shariff Ibrahim Saleh in an-Nahj al-Hamid

The brethren are divided into three categories.

The first: someone who is above your rank, and you know they are above your rank. This person is entitled to your respect and service, in a manner similar to what your Shaykh deserves from you, provided your intention in this is for the sake of Allah Almighty.

The second: someone who is at your level in knowledge and spiritual state. Such a person has the same rights over you as you have over them. However, you should strive to fulfill their rights without demanding anything in return.

The third: someone who is below you in rank and spiritual state. This person deserves your kindness, compassion, goodwill, care, and forgiveness.

It is essential to view your brethren in this manner if you wish to avoid harm. Even among the students of your Shaykh, there may be individuals belonging to all these categories, and it is obligatory to treat each group with the appropriate respect and conduct that suits their status. This etiquette is also obligatory between you and all believers in general, as Allah has established the bond of brotherhood between believers in His saying:

“Indeed, the believers are but brothers.”

The First

It is obligatory on you, O brother, to safeguard the honor of your brothers, whether they are present or absent. It is not permissible to backbite or speak ill of anyone among them, nor should you highlight their faults or deficiencies. Likewise, it is forbidden to create divisions by placing the students of one Muqaddam over another, or by attributing perfection to some and deficiency to others. You must not claim that a certain person has no spiritual experiences or has no understanding of a particular knowledge. Nor should you say that one person has strong faith while another has weak faith, or that one has a high station while another has a low one, or anything similar to that.

Just as you must not speak ill of a brother in their presence or absence, you must also refrain from mentioning their companions, students, family, or clan in a manner that would cause offense, whether they are present or absent. It is equally not permissible to spy on them, investigate their secrets, or pry into their private affairs.

It is impermissible to disclose or reveal a secret someone has entrusted to you, as they would only share it with you out of their trust and respect for you. Similarly, it is incumbent upon a person to refrain from transmitting any criticism or defamation they hear about their brother. The one who conveys such matters becomes a partner in the harm caused by the critic. In reality, the one who informs you of such things is more at fault than the one who initially spoke ill.

For this reason, I have always disregarded anyone who conveyed the words of slanderers or the envy of others against me or some of my loved ones and friends. I considered it a mark of intelligence and integrity for a person not to inform me of the falsehoods others fabricate about me or my loved ones.

Similarly, it is impermissible to betray your brother's secrets or disclose private matters, even after disputes or hostility arise between you. Such behavior reflects a corrupt nature and malicious intent.

Just as you must avoid speaking ill of your brother in his absence or presence, you are obligated to bring joy to his heart by sharing the praise, compliments, and good things you hear about him, even if it elevates him above you. Concealing such praise arises from envy and baseless jealousy. The Sunnah is to rejoice with someone when you hear praise about them and to share with them everything you have heard. The one who conveys praise is a partner in the act of praising.

O brother, it is not permissible for you to be two-faced with your brother in the path. This is considered betrayal in the way of spiritual discipline and a sign of the internal corruption of the one who lacks the manners of the path. It also indicates a lack of sincerity in intention and a divergence from the unified purpose of seeking Allah alone. Being two-faced arises from observing matters other than Allah, which is what turns a person into someone with dual motives.

The least obligation of brotherhood toward fellow Murids of your Shaykh is to treat them as you would want to be treated. Surely, you would prefer that they act toward you with the same virtues discussed earlier. Begin with yourself, and treat them accordingly, so they may reciprocate, Allah willing.

The way of the seekers is rooted in noble character and refined manners. Whoever surpasses you in these has surpassed you in all things.

Among his rights over you in this respect is that if a dispute arises between you and one of your fellow Murids, do not take the matter to your Shaykh without first addressing it directly with the person involved, seeking fairness. If they are fair, the matter is resolved; if not, involve the group of brothers. Only when all efforts fail should you raise the issue to your Shaykh, and even then, it must be with sincere intentions, not to cause discord or harm.

It is permissible to refer the matter to the Shaykh with a pure intention, not with the intent of causing discord and corruption; otherwise, it would be considered backbiting. Backbiting is prohibited by Islamic law among Muslims, so how much graver is it to backbite about the Awliya?

Secondly

Sincerity with your brothers is by teaching the ignorant, guiding the lost, and strengthening the weak, even if it requires traveling to them.

Among the seekers are those at the beginning of the path and those nearing its end. Some are strong, and others are weak. Address each according to their status and level, as explained in works like Sharh al-Hikam al-'Ata'iyyah by Ibn 'Ajibah, may Allah have mercy on him, and Ihya' 'Ulum al-Din by Imam al-Ghazali.

You should know that fulfilling these etiquettes is among the greatest virtues.

Thirdly

Humility towards them, accepting their suggestions, treating them fairly even against yourself, serving them to the best of your ability, assisting them in their needs, and responding to their questions with kindness.

You should overlook their mistakes and slips, as mentioned in the words of Shaykh al-Tijani, may Allah be pleased with him.

Fourthly

Belief in their sainthood, perfection, purity, and virtue, and avoiding observing their flaws. Unless you hold such a belief about them, you will not be able to treat them in a way that pleases Allah and His Messenger. Only someone who possesses perfection and purity can recognize these qualities in others.

All the brothers are Muslims and believers who have fulfilled their obligatory acts and duties, avoided most prohibitions and doubtful matters, engaged in many voluntary acts of goodness, turned their ambitions toward the Hereafter, and turned their hearts and minds away from the world.

Any shortcomings or interruptions they experience are like illnesses from which they may recover, returning to good deeds and improving their conditions. These are the characteristics of Awliya in Islam.

It is not a condition of a saint that he must perform miraculous events, supernatural feats, or extraordinary deeds, contrary to what the ignorant and common people may think.

When you understand this, it becomes incumbent upon you to believe in their sanctity and perfection. If you believe in their perfection and sainthood, you are obliged to do two things.

The first is striving in all that pleases them with sincerity for the sake of Allah. Nothing will be beneficial in this regard if it involves hypocrisy, flattery, or deceit. A person may resort to deceit if their belief in the saints has not yet reached this level.

The second is refraining from anything that harms them, for harming the saints is akin to declaring war against Allah.

BUGYATU-L MUSTAFĪD LI-SHAR'HI MUNYATU-L MURĪD (AN ASPIRATION REALISED IN THE EXPLANATION OF THE "AIM OF THE DISCIPLE")

By: Shaykh Muhammad bin al-Arabī al-Sa'ih

Translated by: Imām Talut Sulaiman Dawood

Pages: 408
CONTENT OF THE BOOK (BUGHYAH AL-MUSTAFID LI SHARH MUNYAH AL-MURID)
👇👇👇
Bughyat al-Mustafid is one of the most important works on the history and rulings of the Tijani Tariqah. Written by Sidi al-Arabi ibn Sa'ih, nicknamed the "Bukhari of the Path", it summarizes the biographical accounts from Jawahir al-Ma'ānī and codifies the rulings of the path that had been scattered in different locations. The author's critical placement in the history of the path, having met many of the Companions of the Shaykh himself, as well as many of the imminent muqaddams, made him an indispensable source of clarity on many of the issues a Tijani disciple will face while walking the path.

The book also serves as a bridge to longer or more complicated works. It has been said, "If you want to read Jawahir al-Ma'ani, read Bughyat al-Mustafid first." This is because he clarifies some of the issues in Jawahir al-Ma'ani that may lead to a disciple having doubts or some misunderstandings.
