The Heritage of Filial Devotion in
Islamic Sainthood
In Islamic spiritual tradition, the saints
(Awliyā)[2] are
recognized not merely by their miraculous capabilities (Karamāt)[3], but by their absolute submission to divine order. Chief among
divine obligations is Birr al-Wālidayn—profound devotion and obedience to one's
parents.
Centuries apart, the lives of Uwais
al-Qarnī (RA) in 7th-century Yemen and Shaykh Jāmi'u Būlala (RA) in
20th-century Nigeria present a striking spiritual parallel: both men possessed
extraordinary closeness to Allah, yet both were defined by the sacrifice of
their greatest personal desires for the sake of their mothers.
Uwais al-Qarnī: The Archetype of
Sacrifice
During the era of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ),
a young man named Uwais al-Qarnī lived in Yemen. His heart yearned for what any
believer would consider the ultimate spiritual blessing: to travel to Medina,
meet the Prophet (ﷺ), and attain the exalted status of a Companion (Ṣaḥābī).
However, Uwais was the sole caregiver for
his elderly, blind mother. Knowing that leaving her would cause her distress
and hardship, Uwais surrendered his personal dream and remained by her side in
Yemen.
Though he never saw the Prophet (ﷺ) with
his physical eyes, his sacrifice resonated in the heavens. The Prophet (ﷺ)
praised Uwais in absentia as the best of the Successors (Tabi'ūn) and
instructed key Companions, including Umar ibn al-Khattāb (RA), to seek Uwais
out and ask for his prayers—a spiritual standing granted specifically because
of his devotion to his mother.
Shaykh Jāmi'u Būlala: The Oath of Offa
In modern history, a remarkably similar
test unfolded in Kwara State, Nigeria. Shaykh Jāmi'u Būlala (RA) had attained
the rare and elevated rank of an Abdāl[4]—a high spiritual guardian endowed with extraordinary gifts,
including the ability to traverse vast distances instantly.
Despite his spiritual authority, Shaykh
Būlala harbored a deep personal desire to migrate from Offa to reside in
Ilorin (which is a city full of ābideen & Awliyyā). However, his mother intuitively understood his wish and firmly forbade
him from leaving. He offered to use his spiritual gifts to return instantly
whenever she called, but she remained steadfast:

"Whether I see you or not,
as long as I am alive, you must not leave Offa."
|
Just days before her death, she bound him
to a final, permanent command:
|
"Oh Muhammad al-Jum'ah
(Jimoh), whether I am alive or deceased, you must never leave or migrate from
Offa."
|
Shaykh Sharaf-Deen Sa'adu-Deen Ajara observed that
Allah seemed to grant every prayer Shaykh Būlala made, and he reconfirmed by asking the Shaykh if there is anything he had requested fom Allah which got rejected. The saint gently
corrected him—that there is a request he made which wasn't approved, noting that Allah had denied his prayer to relocate to Ilorin
because He prioritized his mother's command over his personal desire.
The Parallel Threads of Their Devotion

Surrendering Personal Desires
for Divine Duty: Uwais sacrificed the unmatched
honor of becoming a Ṣaḥābī; Shaykh Būlala surrendered his desire to reside in
Ilorin (a cosmopolitan city of the Ulama & the Awliyyā). Both proved that a mother's comfort supersedes personal ambition, no
matter how noble.

Integrity Beyond Death: Uwais cared for his mother faithfully throughout her lifetime.
Shaykh Būlala demonstrated the same absolute integrity (Amānah) by honoring his
mother's command never to leave Offa long after her death, despite having the
capability to relocate.

Unanswered Prayers as Elevation:
In both cases, Allah "withheld" an outer
desire—meeting the Prophet for Uwais, relocating for Shaykh Būlala—only to
grant them a far higher spiritual rank through their obedience.
The True Mark of Spiritual Greatness
The lives of Uwais al-Qarnī and Shaykh
Jāmi'u Būlala teach a timeless lesson: spiritual mastery is not measured by
working miracles or achieving public renown. It is forged in the quiet,
unyielding submission to one's mother—proving that even an Abdāl must obey.

Bughyat al-Mustafid is one of the most important works on the history and rulings of the Tijani Tariqah. Written by Sidi al-Arabi ibn Sa'ih, nicknamed the "Bukhari of the Path", it summarizes the biographical accounts from Jawahir al-Ma'ānī and codifies the rulings of the path that had been scattered in different locations. The author's critical placement in the history of the path, having met many of the Companions of the Shaykh himself, as well as many of the imminent muqaddams, made him an indispensable source of clarity on many of the issues a Tijani disciple will face while walking the path.
The book also serves as a bridge to longer or more complicated works. It has been said, "If you want to read Jawahir al-Ma'ani, read Bughyat al-Mustafid first." This is because he clarifies some of the issues in Jawahir al-Ma'ani that may lead to a disciple having doubts or some misunderstandings.
