The qualifications of a Muqaddam are detailed in thebooks of the Tariqah. While we will not elaborate onthem at length, but we shall quickly highlight some of them:
A Muqaddam must be a Muslim, of sound mind, an adult, and knowledgeable in essential matters, particularly in the areas of worship (ibadat) and transactions (muamalat) in Islamic jurisprudence.
They must also have sufficient knowledge of the Tariqah Tijaniyyah specifically, and the practices of the spiritual path in general.
The Muqaddam should excel in piety, asceticism, and religious devotion. They must have a clear and explicit authorization to grant permission on the obligatory litanies and some specific optional litanies from a Shaykh of the Tariqah, who serves as the supreme guide, or from someone authorized by a Shaykh of the Tariqa, even if indirectly.
The Muqaddam must also embody patience, gentleness, chastity, humility without weakness, trustworthiness, and righteousness. They should be distinguished by noble character, good companionship, a pure heart, and a lack of attachment to what others possess.
They must not envy or covet the blessings bestowed by Allah upon some of His slaves who may be of higher rank or status, as such tendencies create openings of corruption and ruin.
His knowledge of Ibadat should include knowledge of purification and its rulings, prayer and its rulings, fasting, zakat, and pilgrimage. In knowledge of transactions, it includes knowledge of marriage contracts, trade, and inheritance. All of this is according to one’s ability and capacity.
It is not obligatory for someone to have knowledge of the section on transactions if there is someone within their circle who can take care of it on their behalf. This is because being made a Muqaddam is not based on that but rather on some considerations much more deeper than that.
His knowledge of the Tariqah should include knowledge of the conditions of the obligatory litanies of the Tariqah, the essentials of the lazim, wazifah and the Friday dhikr. It should also include knowledge of the optional and obligatory times for reciting the litanies, what is considered a condition for valid performance (shurut al-Sihhah) and what is considered a condition for perfection (shurut al-kamal). It also includes knowing what requires repetition, what does not, what needs compensation, and what does not.
When all these conditions or the essential ones are met in the Muqaddam, it is permissible for his companions to turn to him for guidance, follow hisexample, and show him the proper etiquette that his position demands. This becomes as obligatory as theconditions themselves, for he is a representative of the Shaykh.
The Shaykh or Muqaddam is accompanied by the Murid solely for the sake of Allah, and he is loved only for this reason. The greatest role model in the Tijaniyyah path is Shaykh al-Tijani, whom we follow and love because he is a saint of Allah. He is devoted to Allah’s obedience, and Allah has favored and loved him for this. He is also a servant of the Divine Presence and knowledgeable in the path of attaining closeness to Allah.
Whoever follows the path of the Mashayikh (spiritual guides) without adhering to these rules will return empty-handed. I say this because some people accompany their Mashayikh expecting miracles, extraordinary feats, and marvels. They set conditions for them that are impossible for any human or only permissible for Prophets and Messengers. Such individuals will not benefit from the Awliya because they are seeking magic and sorcery, not true spiritual guidance.

Written by Sidi al-Arabi ibn Sa'ih, nicknamed the "Bukhari of the Path", it summarizes the biographical accounts from Jawahir al-Ma'ānī and codifies the rulings of the path that had been scattered in different locations. The author's critical placement in the history of the path, having met many of the Companions of the Shaykh himself, as well as many of the imminent muqaddams, made him an indispensable source of clarity on many of the issues a Tijani disciple will face while walking the path.
The book also serves as a bridge to longer or more complicated works. It has been said, "If you want to read Jawahir al-Ma'ani, read Bughyat al-Mustafid first." This is because he clarifies some of the issues in Jawahir al-Ma'ani that may lead to a disciple having doubts or some misunderstandings.
