1. Lineage and Early Settlement
Shaykh Saʿadu-Dīn ibn Abī Bakr ibn Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad al-Awwal al-Nafāwī al-Ilūrī, widely known as Alfa Koro, was a prominent Islamic scholar whose lineage traces back to noble origins.
His grandfather, Ibrāhīm, is recorded to have migrated from Bida in Nupeland to Isin, and subsequently to Ilorin during the reign of the first Emir, Shaykh ʿAbd al-Salām. The family initially settled at the Kijan Compound on Okè Apòmu Street before relocating to Ile Koro—an area that would, by divine ordainment, become the enduring familial residence.
The term Koro, in Yoruba, refers to a narrow path or alley, a descriptor commonly applied to various localities in Ilorin (e.g., Koro-Guruma, Koro-Siodun, Koro-Onibaro). The residence of Shaykh Saʿadu-Dīn, originally known as Koro-Asejana—a nod to the family's ancestral craft in bow-making—later earned the name Ile Alfa Koro (House of Alfa Koro) as it evolved into a beacon of Islamic scholarship.
2. Birth and Upbringing
Due to the absence of precise historical records, the exact year of Shaykh Saʿadu-Dīn’s birth remains indeterminate. However, oral traditions and credible accounts estimate his birth to have occurred in the mid-19th century CE in Ilorin. He was born to Shaykh Abū Bakr ibn Ibrāhīm and his wife Asiyah bint ʿUmar of the Koro-Onibaro family in Adangba.
Raised in an environment steeped in Islamic scholarship and piety, Shaykh Saʿadu-Dīn was profoundly influenced by his father, who was a dedicated Qur’anic teacher. His upbringing combined spiritual cultivation with a lawful livelihood—he engaged in the trading of traditional textiles, journeying across cities such as Borno, Lagos, Kano, Yauri, and Katsina, upholding the Islamic ethos of ḥalāl sustenance and avoiding doubtful earnings.
3. Physical and Moral Characteristics
Shaykh Saʿadu-Dīn was physically described as tall, slender, and fair in complexion. His moral disposition was exemplary: he was characterized by patience, compassion, humility, and unwavering justice. He was known for maintaining strong family ties, assisting the needy, honoring elders, mentoring the youth, and vehemently opposing immorality and corruption. His personal integrity earned him widespread admiration and trust within and beyond his community.
4. Educational Formation and Scholarly Lineage
The Shaykh commenced his formal Islamic education under his father’s tutelage, memorizing the Qur’an at an early age. He subsequently studied under Shaykh Muḥammad Thānī, also known as Alfa Òjìbárà, where he refined his tajwīd and Qur’anic proficiency. He studied alongside notable contemporaries such as Shaykh Amīnullāh (father of Shaykh Sulaiman Ilekewu).
Shaykh Saʿadu-Dīn later enrolled under Shaykh Muḥammad Awal, famously called Alfa Bani, dedicating himself fully to scholarship. Among his colleagues were distinguished scholars like Shaykh ʿUmar Bature, a reciter and Imam.
Under Alfa Bani’s mentorship, he studied classical texts including Tafsīr al-Jalālayn, al-Durūs al-Awaliya, al-Khamsūn Farīḍah, and al-Dāliyah. Following Alfa Bani’s demise, he continued his studies with Shaykh ʿAbd al-Raḥmān Alābidun, frequently joining him for the Maghrib and ʿIshāʾ prayers before returning home.
5. Pedagogical Contributions and Establishment of the Saʿadiyyah Ṣāliḥiyyah School
-Upon completing his advanced studies, Shaykh Saʿadu-Dīn transitioned into teaching. He established a multi-tiered educational model that included:
- Elementary Qur’anic Schools for children, managed by his son Shaykh Muḥammad Murtaḍā;
- Advanced Adult Learning Circles, personally supervised by the Shaykh;
- Formal Arabic Education, institutionalized in 1396 AH (1975 CE) with the founding of the Saʿadiyyah Ṣāliḥiyyah School.
This modern institution, structured by contemporary standards, incorporates curriculum-based instruction and classroom facilities. His grandsons, Shaykh Aḥmad al-Qororwī al-Laymūnī and Shaykh ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Qororwī, played key roles in integrating pedagogical reforms inspired by their teacher, Shaykh Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq ibn Ṣalāḥ al-Dīn Agbarigidoma.
The institution currently offers primary, junior secondary, and senior secondary levels, sustained through the contributions of his progeny, notably Shaykh ʿAbd Allāh al-Quds.
6. Esteem Among Peers and Scholarly Networks
Shaykh Saʿadu-Dīn earned high esteem within Ilorin’s intellectual and spiritual circles. He was deeply respected by both senior scholars and emerging students. His mentor, Alfa Bani, entrusted him with teaching Qur’anic exegesis (tafsīr) during Ramadan. He continued this tradition under Alfa Bani’s successor until his eyesight weakened, after which he recommended Shaykh Saʿadu-Dīn Kakadika as his replacement.
He maintained a close alliance with Shaykh Abū Bakr Agbarigidoma, a student of Shaykh Muḥammad al-Buṣīrī of Eleji. Their scholarly collaboration extended to mutual consultation and poetic tributes—Agbarigidoma even composed a qaṣīdah in Shaykh Saʿadu-Dīn’s honor.
7. Marital Life and Descendants
By the prophetic tradition emphasizing marriage, Shaykh Saʿadu-Dīn entered into multiple lawful unions. His wives included: Jamīlah, Ḥalīmah, Maryam, Ṣafrā’, and Salāmah. He was blessed with numerous children, many of whom followed in his scholarly footsteps.

8. Demise and Legacy
Shaykh Saʿadu-Dīn passed away on Thursday, January 24, 1980 (1399 AH), reportedly at the venerable age of over 120 years. His funeral drew prominent scholars and dignitaries, including the late Emir of Ilorin, Shaykh Muḥammad Dhū al-Qarnayn Al-Gbambari.
His student, Shaykh Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq ibn Ṣalāḥ al-Dīn Agbarigidoma, commemorated his death with a poetic elegy, capturing the spiritual grandeur and lasting impact of his teacher. The poem extols his righteous deeds and beseeches Allah to grant him eternal bliss in Paradise.
Conclusion
Shaykh Saʿadu-Dīn’s life and works stand as a luminous chapter in the intellectual and spiritual history of Ilorin. His legacy continues through the institutions he founded, the scholars he nurtured, and the virtuous life he led. He remains a paradigm of religious devotion, scholarly excellence, and community leadership in West African Islam.
