ABARQUN BADA (A PROFOUNDLY CAPTIVATING DESCRIPTION OF THE PROPHET [SAW])

 

Shaykh Ibrāhīm ʿAbdullāh Niasse, may Allah be pleased with him and, through his love, be pleased with us. Āmīn.

Shaykh Ibrāhīm Maḥmūd Job said that he used to recite the following poem to Shaykh Ibrāhīm, may Allah be pleased with him, every night. One night, while he was with the Shaykh in Qatar, after reciting this poem, he went to sleep. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to him in the very form in which he lived and began introducing him to groups of people, one group after another, who continued greeting him until morning.

He informed the Shaykh, may Allah be pleased with him, of what had happened. The Shaykh said to him: “Did I not tell you that it (i.e this poem) is a blessing for all of us?”

أبرق بدى نحو المرابع يلمــــــــع * فهبني امرءاً إذ يلمع البرق يدمــــــعُ

A-baraqun badā naḥwa l-marābiʻi yalmaʻu ** Fa-habnī mra’an idh yalmaʻu l-barqu yadmaʻu

Is it a flash of lightning that appeared towards the dwellings, gleaming brightly; so imagine me a man who, whenever the lightning flashes, sheds tears.

لمحت بوهن ويك هِجت صبابــــة * ورقراقَ دمعٍ ساعة الحيِّ تهجــــــــعُ

Lamaḥta bi-wahnin wayka hijta ṣabābatan ** Wa-raqrāqa damʻin sāʻata l-ḥayyi tahjaʻu

You caught a faint glimpse—alas!—and longing was stirred within me, while tears flowed gently when the people of the encampment had gone to sleep.

تذكّر أيّام الصِّبا وهي قد مضتْ * ولم يبق إلا لوعةٌ وتوجُّــــــــــــــــــــعُ

​Tadhakkarta ayyāma ṣ-ṣibā wa-hiya qad maḍat ** Wa-lam yabqa illā lawʻatun wa-tawajjuʻu

You recall the days of youth, though they have passed away, and nothing remains except yearning and anguish.

سقى الله أرضاً بالمدينة إنَّهــــا * مـــــحطُّ رحالٍ فيه خّرْقِيَ يُرْقَـــــــــــعُ

Saqā Llāhu arḍan bi-l-Madīnati innahā ** Maḥaṭṭu riḥālin fīhi kharqiya yurqaʻu

May Allah send rain upon a land in Madīnah;

it is the place where travellers alight, where my worn garment is mended.

ديار حبيب الله وهو أمينُــــــــهُ * ديارٌ بها تُلْفى المرافقُ أجمــــــــــــــعُ

​Diyāru ḥabībi Llāhi wa-huwa amīnuhu ** Diyārun bihā tulfā l-marāfiqu ajmaʻu

The dwelling of the Beloved of Allah, His trusted one— a dwelling where every comfort and benefit is found.

ديار لمن هام الفؤاد بحبّـــــــــــه * وتذكاره للقلبِ مرعىً ومرْتــــــــــــــعُ

Diyārun li-man hāma l-fu’ādu bi-ḥubbihi ** Wa-tadhkāruhu li-l-qalbi marʻan wa-martaʻu

The dwelling of one whose love has captivated the heart, and whose remembrance is a pasture and resting place for the heart.

ديار لأعلى الخلق خُلْقاً وخِلْقــــةً * ديار لمن في الخلق يعطِى ويمنـــعُ

​Diyārun li-aʻlā l-khalqi khulqan wa-khilqatan ** Diyārun li-man fī l-khalqi yuʻṭī wa-yamnaʻu

The dwelling of the best of creation, in character and form; the dwelling of one who, among creation, gives and withholds.

وأكرمهِم نفساً وصِهراً ونِسْبــــةً * وعِلْماً وآداباً وأتْقى وأخْشَـــــــــــــعُ

Wa-akramihim nafsan wa-ṣihran wa-nisbatan ** Wa-ʻilman wa-ādāban wa-atqā wa-akhshaʻu

The noblest of them in soul, in in-law relations and lineage, in knowledge and manners, the most God-fearing and devout.

فقد كان خير الخلق فخماً مفخّماً * وذو هيبةٍ والمشْيُ فيهِ تقلُّــــــــــــعُ

​Fa-qad kāna khayru l-khalqi fakhman mufakhkhaman ** Wa-dhū haybatin wa-l-mashyu fīhi taqalluʻu

Indeed, he was the best of creation, majestic and revered, possessed of awe and dignity, and his gait was deliberate.

وأزْهرُ لونٍ أدعجُ العين تــزدري * بعين مَهىً عند الخميلةِ ترْتـــــــــــعُ

Wa-azharu lawnin adʻaju l-ʻayni tazdarī ** Bi-ʻayni mahātin ʻinda l-khamīlati tartaʻu

His complexion was radiant, and his eyes were intensely dark, like the eyes of a gazelle grazing among the leafy trees.

وأنجلُ عينٍ أهْدبُ الشَّفْرِ واســعٌ * جبينُ رسول الله والخَلْقُ أوســــــعُ

Wa-anjalu ʻaynin ahdabu sh-shafri wāsiʻun ** Jabīnu rasūli Llāhi wa-l-khulqu awsaʻu

His eyes were wide, with long eyelashes; the forehead of the Messenger of Allah was broad, and his character even broader.

أزجُّ وأقنى وجه طه مـــــــــــدوّرٌ * ولِحْيتهُ كثاً وصدرٌ موسَّــــــــــــــــعُ

​Azajju wa-aqnā wajhu Ṭā-Hā mudawwarun ** Wa-liḥyatuhu kaththun wa-ṣadrun muwassāʻu

His eyebrows were arched and his nose finely formed; the face of Ṭāhā was rounded, his beard was thick, and his chest broad.

ومنكِبهُ أَعْظِمْ به وعِظامــــــــــهُ * ضِخامٌ وربعُ الفذِّ طه المرفَّــــــــــعُ

Wa-mankibuhu aʻẓim bihi wa-ʻiẓāmuhu ** Ḍikhāmun wa-rabʻu l-qaddi Ṭā-Hā l-muraffaʻu

His shoulders—how magnificent they were!—and his bones were large; his stature was imposing, that of the exalted Ṭāhā.

كذا عضُدٌ عبْلٌ وعبْلٌ ذِراعُـــــــهُ * مُرحَّبُ راحاتٍ والانوار تلمـــــــــــعُ

​Kadhā ʻaḍudun ʻablun wa-ʻablun dhiraaʻuhu ** Muraḥḥabu rāḥātin wa-l-anwāru talmaʻu

His upper arms were strong and muscular, and so were his forearms; his palms were broad, and lights shone from him.

وسائِلُ أَطْرافٍ وغيرُ مشـــــــذّبٍ * عظيمُ كرادِيسٍ من الخلْقِ أرْفـــــعُ

​Wa-sā’ilu aṭrāfin wa-ghayru mushadhdhabin ** ʻAẓīmu karādīsa mina l-khalqi arfaʻu

His limbs were long, well proportioned and untrimmed; his joints were large, and he was the loftiest of creation.

وأشنبُ ثغْرٍ إن تبسّمَ ينجَلــــــــي * كحَبٍّ غمامٍ أو لكالبرقِ يلمـــــــــعُ

​Wa-ashnabu thagrin in tabassama yanjalī ** Ka-ḥabbi ghamāmin aw la-ka-l-barqi yalmaʻu

His mouth was beautiful; when he smiled, it shone forth like raindrops from a cloud, or like lightning flashing.

وهامتهُ عُظمى لِشعرٍ ترجُّــــــــلٌ * وخافض طرفٍ ساكتٌ فهو يخشـــعُ

​Wa-hāmatuhu ʻuẓmā li-shaʻrin tarujjulu ** Wa-khāfiḍu ṭarfin sākitun fa-huwa yakhshaʻu

His head was large, with well-combed hair;

he lowered his gaze and was silent, humble and reverent.

وَأَحْزَانُهُ مَوْصُولَةٌ بِتَفَكُّرٍ * وَإِنْ قَالَ قَالَ الْفَصْلَ وَالْحَقَّ يَرْجِعُ

​Wa-aḥzānuhu mawṣūlatun bi-tafakkurin ** Wa-in qāla qāla l-faḍla wa-l-ḥaqqa yarjiʻu

His concerns were joined with contemplation;

when he spoke, he spoke decisively, and to the Truth he returned.

وينظر لحْظاً وهو للأرضِ غالبـا * يسوقُ صِحاباً والملائكُ تتبـــــــــــعُ

​Wa-yanẓuru laḥẓan wa-huwa li-l-arḍi ghāliban ** Yasūqu ṣiḥāban wa-l-malā’iku tatbaʻu

He would cast a glance, while usually keeping his gaze towards the earth;he would lead his Companions, and the angels would follow.

وَجِيدُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ يُشْبِهُ دُمْيَةً * إِذَا فَرَّقَ الْأَشْعَارَ يَبْدُو وَيَلْمَعُ

Wa-jīdu rasūli Llāhi yushbihu dumyatan ** Idhā farraqa l-ashʻāra yabdū wa-yalmaʻu

The neck of the Messenger of Allah resembles a statue of beauty; when he parted his hair, it appeared radiant and gleaming.

وكاللؤلؤِ المكنون والمسكِ عَرْقُهُ * فمثْل رسولِ الله لم يحظَ مَجمَـــــــعُ

​Wa-ka-l-lu’lu’i l-maknūni wa-l-miski ʻarquhu ** Fa-mithla rasūli Llāhi lam yaḥẓa majmaʻu

He was like concealed pearls, and his perspiration was like musk; no gathering has ever been blessed with one like the Messenger of Allah.

وأحلم خلق الله أعدل خلقه ** من الناس أسخى بل من الناس أشجع

​Wa-aḥlamu khalqi Llāhi aʻdalu khalqihi ** Mina n-nāsi askhā bal mina n-nāsi ashjaʻu

ويخدَمُ للأهلين يخصِفُ نعلـــــــــهُ * ويقطع لحماً وهو للثوب يرقَــــــــعُ

​Wa-yakhdumu li-l-ahlīna yakhṣifu naʻlahu ** Wa-yaqṭaʻu laḥman wa-huwa li-th-thawbi yarqaʻu

He served his family, repairing his own sandals;

he would cut meat and mend his own garment.

أشدُّ حياءً وهو يأتي لمن دعــــا * ويغضب للمولى إلى الحقّ يرجــــعُ

Ashaddu ḥayā’an wa-huwa ya’tī li-man daʻā ** Wa-yaghḍabu li-l-mawla ilā l-ḥaqqi yarjiʻu

He was exceedingly modest, yet he would go to whoever called him; he would become angry for the sake of his Lord, and return to the truth.

ولم يتورّع عن حلالٍ ولو حــــلاَ * ولم تُلفهِ في غالب الوقت يشْبــــعُ

Wa-lam yatawarraʻ ʻan ḥalālin wa-law ḥalā ** Wa-lam tulfihi fī ghālibi l-waqti yashbaʻu

He did not abstain from what Allah had made lawful, however simple it might be; yet he was rarely found to have eaten his fill.

ويركب أحيانا جوادا ومـــــــــــرَّةً * حماراً وحيناً راجلاً يتقلَّـــــــــــــــعُ

​Wa-yarkabu aḥyānan jawādan wa-marratan ** Ḥimāran wa-ḥīnan rājilan yataqallaʻu

At times he would ride a horse, and at other times a donkey; and sometimes he would walk on foot with measured steps.

كذلك في الملبوس والطِّيبُ فائحٌ * يجالسُ أقواماً والأصواتُ ترفـــعُ

​Kadhālika fī l-malbūsi wa-ṭ-ṭību fā’iḥun ** Yujālisu aqwāman wa-l-aṣwātu turfaʻu

Likewise in his clothing, while his fragrance spread around him; he would sit with people even when their voices were raised.

ويمزحُ أحياناً يولِّفُ مــــــــــــرةً * وما هاب مُلكاً قطُّ فالشّانُ أرفـــعُ

Wa-yamzaḥu aḥyānan yu’allifu marratan ** Wa-mā hāba mulkan qaṭṭu fa-sh-sha’nu arfaʻu

At times he would jest, and at times he would reconcile people; he never feared worldly kingship, for his station was far higher.

وما حقّرَ المسكينَ يدعو جميعَهم * وبالله مولى الخلقِ ذا الخلقَ يجمــعُ

​Wa-mā ḥaqqara l-miskīna yadʻū jamīʻahum ** Wa-bi-Llāhi mawlā l-khalqi dhā l-khulqa yajmaʻu

He never despised the poor; he called all people,

and by Allah, the Master of creation, he united this creation.

وأكرمه المولى أجلّ كرامــــــــةٍ * وخصّصه من للخلائقِ ينفــــــــــــعُ

​Wa-akramahu l-mawlā ajalla karāmatin ** Wa-khaṣṣaṣahu man li-l-khalā’iqi yanfaʻu

His Lord honoured him with the greatest honour,

and chose him above all who benefit creation.

عليه صلاة الله ما ذرّ شـــــــارِقٌ * وغنّتْ حماماتٌ على الغُصْنِ تسْجَعُ

​ʻAlayhi ṣalātu Llāhi mā dharra shāriqun ** Wa-ghannat ḥamāmātun ʻalā l-ghuṣni tasjaʻu

May Allah's blessings be upon him for as long as the sun rises, and as long as doves sing melodiously upon the branches.

وما رُدَّ ضيمُ الدَّهْرِ عن ساحة الذي * يزخرف أمداحاً ويشدو ويسجــــعُ

​Wa-mā rudda ḍaymu d-dahri ʻan sāḥati l-ladhī **

 Yuzakhrifu amdāḥan wa-yashdū wa-yasjaʻu

And for as long as the afflictions of time are warded away from the presence of him who adorns his praises, sings them and chants them melodiously.

وآلٍ وأصحابٍ مدى قول شيِّـــــــــقٍ * أبرقٌ بدا نحو المرابعِ يلمـــــــــــعُ

Wa-ālin wa-aṣḥābin madā qawli shayyiqin ** A-baraqun badā naḥwa l-marābiʻi yalmaʻu

And may He bless his Family and Companions for as long as beloved says:

“Is it a flash of lightning appeared towards the dwellings, gleaming brightly”?

Bughyat al-Mustafid is one of the most important works on the history and rulings of the Tijani Tariqah. Written by Sidi al-Arabi ibn Sa'ih, nicknamed the "Bukhari of the Path", it summarizes the biographical accounts from Jawahir al-Ma'ānī and codifies the rulings of the path that had been scattered in different locations. The author's critical placement in the history of the path, having met many of the Companions of the Shaykh himself, as well as many of the imminent muqaddams, made him an indispensable source of clarity on many of the issues a Tijani disciple will face while walking the path.

The book also serves as a bridge to longer or more complicated works. It has been said, "If you want to read Jawahir al-Ma'ani, read Bughyat al-Mustafid first." This is because he clarifies some of the issues in Jawahir al-Ma'ani that may lead to a disciple having doubts or some misunderstandings.
