KHADĪJATU AL-KUBRĀ BINT SHEHU UTHMĀN IBN FODIYO

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May Allah send blessings upon our Master Muhammad and upon his family and companions and grant them peace abundantly.

She was the learned, devout, knowledgeable, noble, and distinguished saintly woman Khadija, daughter of Nur al-Zaman (Light of the Time), the Renewer of the faith, the Imam of the saints, Shehu Uthman ibn Fodio Muhammad ibn Uthman ibn Salih ibn Harun ibn Muhammad Ghurtu ibn Muhammad Jubba ibn Muhammad Sanbu ibn Masiran ibn Ayyub ibn Bubba Baba (Abu Bakr) ibn Musa Jokolli ibn Imam Dambuba al-Turudi.

As for her lineage to the Prophet ﷺ through her grandmother, she is Sayyida Khadija, daughter of Uthman, son of Sayyida Hawwa, daughter of Sayyida Fatima, daughter of Muhammad al-Sharif, son of Abd al-Samad, son of Ahmad al-Sharif, son of Ali al-Yanbu’i, son of Abd al-Razzaq, son of al-Salih, son of al-Mubarak, son of Ahmad, son of Abi al-Hasan Ali al-Shadhili, son of Abdullah, son of Abd al-Jabbar, son of Tamim, son of Hurmuz, son of Hatim, son of Qasi, son of Yusuf, son of Yusha’, son of Ward, son of Batal, son of Ahmad, son of Muhammad, son of Isa, son of Muhammad, son of al-Hasan al-Sibt, son of Ali ibn Abi Talib and Fatima al-Zahra, daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and upon his pure family and his righteous companions.

As for Khadija’s mother, she was the wife of Shehu Uthman, Sayyida Umm Muhammad Sa’d Aisha Gabindu, daughter of Shaykh Muhammad Sa’d ibn Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Sa’d ibn Muhammad Ladan ibn Idris ibn Masiran ibn Ayyub ibn Bubba Baba ibn Musa Jokolli ibn Imam Dambuba al-Turudi. She had a great share of righteousness and goodness, a firm foundation in this matter, and a pleasing state and steadfast station in sainthood. May Allah be pleased with her, for she attained the utmost in asceticism, righteousness, and meticulous piety, along with complete spiritual struggles and disciplines. She was among those who knew Allah and attained spiritual realization and mastery at the hands of her husband, Sheikh Uthman ibn Fodio. In summary, she was among the righteous servants of Allah and the best of the devout in the Ummah.

Sayyida Khadija Al-Kubra had brothers and sisters, among them: the grammarian Muhammad, nicknamed Sa’d, who was the eldest of Shehu Uthman ibn Fodio’s children. He grew up learning the Quran and religious knowledge, studied grammar and morphology, and interpreted the Quran and Hadith. In summary, he absorbed and retained knowledge, and blessings and excellence were evident in him. He had no descendants.

Among them was also the knowledgeable, insightful Shaykh, the great scholar who combined Sharia and Sufi reality, Muhammad Sanbu. Khadija’s son, Shaykh Abd al-Qadir ibn Mustafa, said about his uncle: “He was the ascetic, righteous, devout saint, the knower of Allah, possessing pure, holy breaths and complete, manifest lights, the master of subtle, truthful allusions and eloquent, superior expressions, overflowing truths and harmonious subtleties, radiant dawns and illuminating flashes, fragrant breezes and shining gleams, holy glances and intuitive utterances, the leader of his era in establishing the pillars of the spiritual path, the Imam of his time in perfecting the foundations of reality, the guide of the people of his time in knowledge, action, state, station, and spiritual authority, the pole of the circle of sainthood, the greatest gate opened for those endowed with divine care. He had a long hand in effective spiritual authority and a vast reach in complete realization. The hand of divine nurturing raised him in his youth until the luminous gleams shone upon him in his early adulthood, so the light of truth became a guide to his presence until the fruits of sainthood were humbled before him.” He had descendants.

Among them was the scholar and leader Muhammad al-Bukhari, who was a jurist, deeply knowledgeable, eloquent, highly intelligent, noble in character, loving of knowledge and its people, quick in understanding, strong in argument, dignified, awe-inspiring, eager for good deeds and benefits, and exceedingly modest. He was known for answered prayers and possessed spiritual unveiling or special gifts. He had descendants.

Among them was Mallah Yidi, who died young. Among them was Aisha, who had no descendants. Among them was Amina, and among them was Juwayra, both of whom died young.

As for the husband of Sayyida Khadija Al-Kubra, he was Abu Abd al-Rahman Mustafa ibn Muhammad al-Turudi ibn Ibrahim ibn Musa ibn Uthman ibn ‘Aal ibn Muhammad Jubba ibn Muhammad Sanbu ibn Masiran ibn Ayyub ibn Bubba Baba ibn Musa Jokolli ibn Imam Dambuba al-Turudi. He was among the scholars of his time and the jurists of the era, one to whom people turned for knowledge of the Sunnah and the jurisprudence of the faith. Alongside his knowledge, jurisprudence, and memorization, he was endowed with excellent morals, a sound heart, and good opinions of Muslims. Sheikh Abdullah ibn al-Qadi al-Hajj said about him: “Allah aided him with strength of insight, excellence of thought, enthusiasm for teaching, and spreading knowledge without weariness or laziness, along with good upbringing of children, attending to their needs, and overlooking their faults. His profound blessings and numerous favors are beyond count. In summary, he was among the firmly grounded, versatile scholars, the pole of the scholars and the God-fearing, the source of splendid sciences and the mine of complete understandings.”

My companion Sheikh Muhammad Amin Salami said: “It is worth mentioning that the Commander of the Faithful, Muhammad Bello, laid the foundation of the Islamic Institute in the town of this scholar.” Shaykh Mustafa passed away on the evening of Monday in the year 1261 AH in his residence in Salama, at the age of sixty-four. His body was carried from there to the city of Wurno, where he is buried near his friend Sultan Muhammad Bello. May Allah have mercy on them both.

My friend, Sidi Shaykh Muhammad al-Amin Dan Tafa, informed me that, his grandparents, Sayyidatu Khadijatu al-Kubra and Shaykh Mustafa ibn Muhammad al-Turudi only had two sons: Shaykh Abd al-Rahman and the renown gnostic Shaykh Abd al-Qadir.

My master and teacher, the Wazir Junayd ibn Muhammad al-Bukhari, said in his The Fragrance of Basil in Seeking Blessings Through the Mention of Shehu Uthman, regarding his daughters, may Allah be pleased with them: “The first among them is Khadija, may Allah be pleased with her. She was among the righteous saints, the devout ascetics, and the daughters whom the Shehu migrated with from Degel. She was renowned for her noble states, pleasing morals, abundant knowledge, and splendid truths. She had a firm grounding in various sciences and was among those the Shehu raised to perfection. She composed countless poems in the Fulani language, including a poem on the signs of the Mahdi’s appearance, a poem elegizing her husband, the scholar Mustafa, father of her son Abd al-Qadir, a poem of supplication for the town of Wurno which she composed in Fulani after the Commander of the Faithful Muhammad Bello prayed for it in Arabic, a poem on jurisprudence, a poem on honoring parents, a poem on grammar, and others too numerous to count. This suffices for now.

Her noble son, Shaykh Abd al-Qadir ibn Mustafa, elegized her with a poem in the meter of dali, which is as follows:

The heart is overwhelmed by grief and sorrow, hoping for abundant reward tomorrow.

If your great loss has come swiftly, the reward is more pleasing for the seeker.

Follow the Prophet’s words for solace, as he did when losing Ibrahim, of pure lineage.

Let the eye weep and the heart submit, content with the decree of the Master.

Remembering that death is a path, from which none can deviate.

Nay, it is a gathering place for all the first, and on its steps, the first are followed.

Let this suffice as admonition to urge piety, and strive for provisions for the upright journey.

The flute’s lament for the beloved, its sighs rise with burning grief.

For this, the clouds pour rain, mourning for the great loss.

If my loss is great, she was a tender, compassionate mother to her son.

Her gentleness embraced kin and others, her character was vast and generous.

For her virtues and lofty station, my grief is unending and increasing.

The pillars of the structure and its roof remain, standing firm on solid foundations.

The loss of one like her is a calamity, felt by the possessors of devoted hearts.

Those who uphold every enduring right, and walk the straightest path.

Hearts revive in their presence, and sanctities are protected from harm.

Let us fold a page of their virtues, for my hand cannot record them all.

May Allah water her grave and her station with showers of constant, covering forgiveness.

May He admit her to the highest gardens, seating her with cups of pleasure in the abode of truth.

May He remove from her every terrible evil, from terror, loneliness, or hardship.

With spirit and basil in the abode of eternity, and gardens and divine pleasure on the Day of Reckoning.

In the company of the best of creation, the Chosen One, may Allah bless him as long as the clouds rain.

And in the company of his family and noble kin, and his daughters, the possessors of perfect virtue.

In the gardens of Paradise, in the highest heights, at the right of Your Throne, in eternal bliss.

This concludes. May Allah renew for us the blessings of her sanctity and sainthood. Amen.”
