SERMON FOR THE MONTH OF RAMADAN

Al-hamdu li-Llah Who has made fasting a protection for the pious [muttaqīn] and the month of Ramadan blessed for the believers, a source of profit for the worshipers and beloved to the gnostics’ hearts. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant whom He chose and sent to all creation. May Allah’s salah (blessing) and peace be with the messengers’ master, the pious’ imam, the noble radiant ones’ leader, and with his family and companions, the followers and their followers with excellence to the Day of Judgment.
To proceed:
O people, have taqwa of Allah as He deserves and remain aware of Him like the one who knows that He Most High hears and sees. Know that the best speech is Allah’s Book and the best guidance is Muhammad’s guidance; newly invented things are the worst, every innovation is misguidance and all misguidance is in the Fire.
Allah Most High said: ‘O you who believe, fasting has been enjoined upon you as it was enjoined on those before you, that you may have taqwa.’ Bukhari reported on the authority of Abu Hurayrah – may Allah be pleased with him – that Allah’s Messenger – pace and blessings be upon him – said: ‘Whoso fasts Ramadan in faith and expectation for reward will be forgiven for their previous sins.’ Bukhari also reported on the authority of Abu Hurayrah – may Allah be pleased with him – that Allah’s Messenger – peace and blessings be upon him – said: ‘Fasting is a protection for the one fasting commits no obscenity or vice. Should one revile or fight the one who fasts, let the latter say: “I am a man who is fasting. I am a man who is fasting.” By He in Whose hand my soul is: the mouth’s smell of the one fasting is sweeter to Allah Most High than the musk’s perfume. [Allah says:] “They leave their food, drink and desire for Me. Fasting is for Me and I reward for it, and each good deed is rewarded tenfold.”’ Bukhari also reported on the authority of Abu Hurayrah – may Allah be pleased with him – that Allah’s Messenger – pace and blessings be upon him – said: ‘Whoso breaks their fast on a day of Ramadan without an excuse or sickness, even if they were to fast for eternity, it would not suffice as compensation.’ Bukhari also reported on the authority of Ibn ʽAbbas – may Allah be pleased with both – that Allah’s Messenger – pace and blessings be upon him – said: ‘Seek the Night of Destiny in the last ten nights of Ramadan when nine remain, when seven remain, when five remain. [i.e.: on the 21st, 23rd and 25th night]’ Muslim reported in his Sahih on the authority of Abu Hurayrah – may Allah be pleased with him – that Allah’s Messenger – peace and blessings be upon him – said: ‘The five prayers, a Jumʽah to the next and a Ramadan to the next expiate for what is in between if the major sins are avoided.’ Ibn Khuzaymah and Ibn H̩ibban reported on the authority of Salman al-Farisi – may Allah be pleased with him – that he said: ‘Allah’s Messenger – peace and blessings be upon him – addressed us on the last day of Shaʽban and said: “O people, a great and blessed month is upon you, a month wherein is a night better than a thousand months, a month fasting whose daytime was made obligatory for you by Allah and standing in prayer through its night-time voluntary. Whoso approaches Allah in it by performing a good deed is like the one who performs an obligation in other months. Whoso performs an obligation in it is like the one who performs seventy obligations in other months. It is the month of patience, and patience’s reward is the Garden, and the month of charity, and a month in which the believer’s provision is increased. Whoso gives a fasting person that with which to break their fast, it will be a means for their sins’ forgiveness and their necks’ freedom from the Fire and they shall be rewarded like them without this reducing their reward in the least.” They said: “O Messenger of Allah, not all of us have the means to feed a fasting person!” So Allah’s Messenger – peace and blessings be upon him – said: “Allah shall give this reward to those who give a fasting person a date, a sip of water or some watered-down milk to break their fast. It is a month whose beginning is mercy, whose middle is forgiveness and whose end is freedom from the Fire. Whoso lightens the burden upon their slave, Allah shall forgive them and free them from the Fire. Therefore cultivate four traits in it: two that please your Lord and two you cannot do without. As for the two that please your Lord, they are witnessing that there is no god but Allah and you seeking forgiveness. As for the two you cannot do without, it is you asking Allah for the Garden and seeking refuge with Him from the Fire. Whoso gives to drink to a fasting person who is thirsty, Allah shall give them such a drink that they shall not feel thirst thereafter until they enter the Garden.”’
Fortunate indeed is a servant given success to follow the Sunnah of the best servant, for that is really taqwa and taqwa is the best provision. Allah Most High said in the last ayah to be revealed: ‘Beware of a day in which you shall be returned to Allah and then every soul shall be paid fully what they have earned and they shall not be wronged.
